Nayeemul Hassan, a Pakistani origin British citizen was elected Lord Mayor of Manchester on May 15. A Labour party councillor Nayeem had earlier been Deputy Mayor. Manchester City Council has 100 members. Of these 16 belong to Muslim community. Even earlier, another Muslim Muhammad Afzal Khan had been elected Lord Mayor of Manchester.
