New York State Recognizes ‘World Hijab Day’ with Official Resolution

The New York State Senate has officially designated February 1, 2025, as World Hijab Day, a move welcomed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Introduced by Senator Roxanne Persaud, the resolution aims to promote religious tolerance, cultural understanding, and international solidarity. Now in its 12th year, World Hijab Day serves as a global platform to challenge stereotypes and celebrate women’s empowerment through their choice to wear the hijab.

Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, praised the decision, calling it a testament to New York’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. She emphasized the importance of amplifying the voices of hijab-wearing women and addressing the discrimination they face.

Founded in 2013 by Nazma Khan, World Hijab Day has grown into an international observance, encouraging women from all backgrounds to wear a hijab for a day to foster empathy and understanding.
